Rupert and Rothschild Wine Farm

About Rupert and Rothschild Wine Farm

The Rupert & Rothschild partnership was formed in 1997 by the late Dr Anton Rupert of South Africa and the late Baron Edmond de Rothschild of France. Their vision and guiding principles were carried forward by their sons, the late Anthonij Rupert and Baron Benjamin de Rothschild. Today the Rupert family and Baron Benjamin de Rothschild share this prestigious partnership in wine production.

The history behind the Rupert and Rothschild Wine Farm

At the foot of the spectacular Simonsberg mountain in the Franschhoek Valley lies the historic French Huguenot farm Fredericksburg, established in 1690 and now home to the Rupert & Rothschild Wine Farm. It was in this valley over 300 years ago that the early French Huguenots first discovered a terroir similar to that of certain winegrowing regions in France. Hence their decision to settle and cultivate vineyards here like the Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons.

Philosophy

In addition to the Rupert & Rothschild families striving to produce world-class wine, they are deeply committed to the preservation and conservation of the environment. This resulted in Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons being the first winery in South Africa to be awarded ISO14001 Environmental Management Certification. Benefits of the system include the creation of an improved and safer working environment, reduced costs and improved efficiency as well as customer and public confidence that the company is committed to meeting its environmental responsibilities. The winery also has HACCP Certification.

Social Responsibility

The Rupert and Rothschild Wine Farm entered into a joint social responsibility initiative with the two nearby Rupert-owned properties; Anthonij Rupert Wines (www.rupertwines.com) and La Motte (www.la-motte.com) to establish the Dennegeur community project for the workers on the three historic farms. Situated just outside the town of Franschhoek, the project has been gaining steady momentum over the past few years and is aimed at giving the workers a real stake in the farming activities.

The Dennegeur community initiative is to give the workers the opportunity to own their own homes after 20 years of service on the farm, and is aimed at giving the families who have lived in the Franschhoek valley for decades a stake in the area. The structures of the houses are such that an outside room can easily be erected to ensure that grandparents could live with their children. Close family relationships are thus encouraged.

Apart from the houses, the project incorporates a community centre, a daycare centre for pre-school children, a clinic, a computer centre and recreational facilities including a swimming pool and a rugby field, providing a safe and secure environment for the families who live there.

The Dennegeur community was created to enable workers to become more actively involved in farming activities in the hope that it would serve as an example of how to achieve empowerment. Thus a sustainable farming project is incorporated whereby the workers are involved in an organic vegetable project to generate cash in hand. The project does not incorporate vineyards as these would take too long to become profitable.

The Dennegeur community enjoys great support from the workers and has become a source of pride for the residents. The Rupert and Rothschild families hope that the years of planning that went into the project will have a meaningful impact on the lives of the farm workers, and that the Dennegeur community can serve as an example for true empowerment.
